9 DeFi Power Plays You Missed — And the Lessons They Teach

In crypto, the biggest payouts rarely come from the obvious blue-chip farms everyone is tweeting about. Over the last two years I’ve stacked my largest wins by poking around dusty corners of DeFi where few wallets dared to venture. From scooping Olympus at backing price to squeezing 7 % weekly arbitrage out of Jupiter’s JLP pool, every hit shared a pattern: it was new, misunderstood, or annoyingly manual. Curiosity, friction, and speed mattered far more than bankroll size. Below, I unpack eight specific plays—plus the mindset behind them—so you can spot the next sleeping giant before the herd wakes up.

Below, I unpack eight specific plays, plus the mindset behind them, so you can spot the next sleeping giant before the herd wakes up.

Olympus at Backing Price: The Trade Everyone Missed

Olympus at Backing Price The Trade Everyone Missed.jpg

In late 2022 Olympus DAO’s OHM token briefly traded at the protocol’s own treasury backing, roughly the value of the risk-free assets sitting inside the DAO. Most players wrote the project off after the ‘OHM-fork’ bubble collapsed, so order books were thin and sentiment was toxic. I ignored the noise, double-checked the on-chain treasury, and bought at backing price with size. The risk-reward was asymmetric: downside was cushioned by real assets, upside came if the market merely re-rated OHM to a modest premium. It did. Even though I exited too early, this single curiosity-driven play became one of my all-time favorites.

JLP Arbitrage: Unlimited Size, Zero Spotlight

JLP Arbitrage Unlimited Size, Zero Spotlight.jpg

Jupiter’s JLP pool quietly offered one of the cleanest arbitrage loops I’ve ever seen. Twice a week for several weeks, price discrepancies between JLP and its underlying basket opened windows for 3–7 % gains. Because the pool had deep liquidity, position size was essentially unlimited. I was already farming the ecosystem, so I understood swap fees, emissions, and timing better than the bots circling overhead. Execution was simple: mint JLP, redeem components, and hedge exposure, all inside a single block. Rinse and repeat. A friend watching the same charts called it boring; my wallet called it the best free money online.

Tensor Farming: Manual Work, 400 % Rewards

Tensor Farming Manual Work, 400 Rewards.jpg

Tensor’s TNSR points program looked downright ugly from the outside. The UI was clunky, reward math opaque, and you had to manually list obscure Solana NFTs every few hours. Translation: nobody bothered. I leaned in, deposited idle SOL, and ran the tedious routine for three months. Even after the team clawed back a third of my rewards, the position paid over 400 % on the SOL I had parked. Impermanent loss was minimal because bids sat close to floor. The secret wasn’t secret at all, it was a willingness to do manual labor while everyone else chased slick dashboards and shiny hype.

Pendle PTs: Loops That Printed Triple-Digit APY

Pendle PTs Loops That Printed Triple-Digit APY.jpg

Principal Tokens (PTs) on Pendle turned into a gold mine last January when the rest of crypto Twitter still thought Pendle only did boring fixed-rate swaps. By looping PT deposits through Morpho, I locked 100 %-plus yields for two full months. The opportunity existed because lenders still priced borrowing absurdly cheap and the UI demanded a few extra clicks that scared casual users. Predictably, once threads and dashboards appeared, returns collapsed to single digits. Lesson: if you hear about a trade on a podcast, you’re probably late. If you have to build your own spreadsheet, you might be truly early.

ETHFI Looping: A 250 % APR Safety Net

ETHFI Looping A 250 APR Safety Net.jpg

ETHFI, EtherFi’s liquid-staking derivative, launched in May 2024 with little fanfare outside Ethereum circles. By depositing ETHFI as collateral, borrowing stETH, swapping back, and repeating, I built a four-layer stack that yielded roughly 250 % annualized, without touching obscure shitcoins. The risk profile was mild: a double de-peg would have to hit both ETHFI and stETH simultaneously before liquidation. Because the strategy felt complicated, only a handful of wallets tried it, leaving rates fat for months. My biggest regret isn’t losing money; it’s that I ran the loop too small while waiting for Twitter to catch on and see yields compress later.

Extra Finance: Delta-Neutral, Dollar-Rich

Extra Finance Delta-Neutral, Dollar-Rich.jpg

Extra Finance burst onto the scene promising delta-neutral yields that looked too good to be true, and for most people, that was reason enough to ignore it. By pairing long and short perps inside the protocol’s vaults, I clipped 300–400 % APR for an entire quarter. The trick was monitoring funding flips manually; bots eventually flooded in, but early depositors already bagged the cream. Yes, returns eventually normalized, yet the experiment proved a point: high friction plus moderate complexity buys time. If you can stomach spreadsheets full of Greeks, there’s still edge hiding in so-called neutral strategies for resourceful farmers with grit.

Scroll Loops & Bots: Automation Beats Noise

Scroll Loops Bots Automation Beats Noise.jpg

Scroll, Ethereum’s zk-Rollup, was anything but secret; the alpha lay in the way you fought for block space. I wrote a crude bot to slip looping transactions between whale bundles, harvesting airdrop points while most users waited minutes for finality. Returns weren’t as flashy, think 30–60 % APR, but the strategy scaled because competition avoided the hassle of maintaining servers and sniping gas spikes. Automation turned friction into edge: I could sleep while the bot earned. Even a modest VPS bill paled against steady yields and upcoming Scroll token promises. Sometimes the play isn’t hidden; it’s hiding behind a terminal prompt awaiting discovery.

Lessons Learned: Novelty, Friction, Curiosity

Lessons Learned Novelty, Friction, Curiosity.jpg

Zooming out, every monster win above shared three threads: novelty, friction, and relentless curiosity. New protocols offer outsized yields because valuation models haven’t formed, but the window slams shut once influencers publish step-by-steps. Friction, whether manual listing, funding flips, or gas wars, acts as a moat until tooling arrives. Curiosity is the catalyst that pushes you to click the scary button before the crowd. Finally, don’t forget life outside the terminal; alternating sprints of high performance with seasons of rest keeps you solvent mentally and financially. Want alpha? Go where it’s messy, do what’s hard, then know when to hit the beach.
